This could be described as one giant leap for mankind, as the first tweet of its kind has been beamed from space to 234,240 followers. That’s right; the micro blogging phenomenon that is Twitter has experienced its first taste of interplanetary communication and is probably destined to go down in the history books as the first such act of its kind. Mike Massimino works for NASA and can be followed on Twitter as ‘@Astro_Mike’. The tweet in question looked like this: “From orbit: Launch was awesome!! I am feeling great, working hard, & enjoying the magnificent views, the adventure of a lifetime has begun!”

Astro_Mike is part of a seven man crew who departed from Cape Canaveral on a maintenance mission to keep the Hubble Space Telescope ticking over until 2014. Having received the blessing of the NASA management, the social media spaceman will be able to keep us up to speed with the mission and enlighten his followers in a completely unique and innovative way.
So congratulations to NASA on embracing the world of Twitter and adding a totally new meaning to the phrase ‘global Twittersphere’. They have used Twitter in the past, but to use it within the context of a live space mission is definitely something of a first. It will be exciting to see how the mission develops, perhaps we should be expecting a few pictures or amusing anecdotes from onboard the shuttle. One serious question, how do they get an Internet connection in space?
