Social media is very much like chemistry. There are many elements that can be added into the melting pot and an infinite variety of combinations that you can create and utilise. Twitter + Digg + Flickr will provide a completely different output in comparison to using Stumbleupon + Delicious + Blogging. Of course it would be foolish to overlook the most important aspect of this process, the people!
'Lifestreaming' seems to be the operative buzz word of the moment and we can now relay our every movement and thought via a vast array of social media tools. This social and technological phenomenon is described as being "an online record of a person's daily activities, either via direct video feed or via aggregating the person's online content such as blog posts, social network updates, and online photos."
And now, we have news that AOL's former social networking behemoth Bebo, is about to re-stake its claim in the market as the worlds first social media aggregation tool. Bebo has been uncharacteristically quiet since the acquisition last year, with a noticeable migration of users towards Facebook (isn't it just so much better???). In order to reinstate confidence in the sites commercial value, it has introduced a 'pseudo friend-feed' facility that combines Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, YouTube and Delicious.
Despite courting controversy and initial privacy concerns, the use of the 'status update' has been one of the most compelling and addictive elements of the social media revolution, as demonstrated by services like 'Twitter'. Bebo are keen to point out the one feature that appears to set it aside from Facebook is its ability to integrate with AOL's AIM & ICQ instant messaging services. This seems like a logical and natural progression in the turbulent evolution of social media. It also seems to be an astute strategic move to gain a 'first-mover' position ahead of MySpace and Facebook. Expect these players to follow suit shortly, whether or not this will this will create new users remains largely unpredictable.
