Tesco To Sell iPhone

Supermarket behemoth Tesco will join a growing list of distributors as it has today announced plans to stock and sell the Apple iPhone. With plans well underway, a spokesman for the firm suggested that the handset could be on Tesco shelves in time for the festive season.

At this stage, precise details of each available tariff have not been revealed, although prices are believed to be ‘competitive’.  However, as with all Apple products including iPhone’s and computer hardware such as the iMac, pricing between alternative distributors does not tend to vary a great deal. The difference between the O2 and Orange tariff is said to vary by a matter of pennies.

In September, O2 lost its exclusive distribution contract to sell the iPhone that had been in place since 2007.  More recently, both Vodafone and Orange have taken advantage of these open distribution agreements with Apple.  Orange has already begun to prize business away from O2 having stocked the handsets for over a month, with Vodafone expected to enter the market in early 2010. Orange reported bumper first day sales of over 30,000 handsets in the UK alone.

Tesco mobile is in fact a joint venture with O2, offering customers both pay-as-you-go and monthly contract tariff options. O2 has sold over 1 million iPhone handsets and enjoyed sole exclusivity of the iPhone for over two years, enabling them to adopt customers from competing network operators.

So what impact does this have on the market and the applications that will be available? Certainly in Scotland, we are starting to see a significant rise in the number of firms willing to adopt an iPhone application as part of a broader marketing and branding strategy. As the consumer market for iPhone handsets grows, so too will the demand for a wide variety of applications and games. Developing an iPhone application is the modern day equivalent of a building a website. It is a tool that can be used for branding, sales revenue or deeper customer engagement.
