The Facebook iPhone development team has recently submitted an exciting software update to Apple for approval on the application store. Although the approval process can be notoriously fickle the application is expected to emerge on the store in the next day or two. There will be many new tantalising features making its way onto the software including the ‘new’ style news feed, the ability to ‘like’ stuff and an events manager. However, most exciting of all, is the ability to upload video directly to Facebook from your 3GS iPhone.
Whilst Facebook is massively popular for uploading pictures, it has always lagged behind YouTube in the video uploading stakes. Now that the new iPhone handset finally possesses the ability to handle videos, assuming the process is easy to use, many owners of the Apple handset may to choose to bypass YouTube and go directly to Facebook.
The social networking sites ability to handle uploaded videos has often been criticised with Facebook themselves placing little emphasis on the feature. Despite offering HD video support and the ability to embed footage in third party sites, Zuckerberg’s army has concentrated on harnessing a plethora of static photos.

The technology is still in need of some refinement. Certain settings within the privacy controls make it challenging to create a viral video phenomenon, but this latest move is clearly a step in the right direction and a signal of intent. Bearing in mind the requirements of the average Facebook user, enabling 3GS upload could certainly give Facebook one up on YouTube. Google aren’t quaking in their boots just yet, as users’ willingness to upload video footage as well as photos will be tested in the coming days and months.
As a user, what do you expect from the application? Have you ever bothered to actually upload a video to Facebook? If you own a 3GS, will you be compelled to start adding footage to the social networking site?
