Apple iTablet To Be Named iSlate?

RSS Icon

In the world of Apple, it is not uncommon for whispers and rumors to eventually materialise as fully fledged products. Late last year Waracle ran a story about developing for the hotly anticipated iTablet. Now it seems the device will be named as the ‘iSlate’. Needless to say, irrespective of terminology, Waracle will be looking to develop a range of applications and software for the 10-inch iSlate in 2010.  The device is set to bridge the gap between the smart phone and the recently popularised notebook computer. The iSlate will be perfect for reading books, newspapers and magazines online and could well displace technologies such as Amazon’s Kindle, a device dedicated solely to this pursuit.

Given that this is still technically just a rumor, it is reassuring to have some solid evidence to back it up.  In fact, Apple purchased the domain name www.islate.com way back in 2007.  Initially, the owner of the domain was not available to see in public view.  However, MacRumours picked up on the fact that for a brief period in 2007 it was clear that Apple had in fact purchased the domain.

Although the iSlate sounds like a decent name, we have already heard mumblings of a product seemingly referred to as the ‘iPad’. The truth is that companies like Apple will often buy multiple domain names for products that have not yet been released or in some cases developed.  This prevents other companies purchasing the same domain and the fact Apple have simply purchased it does not provide total proof that the product will be called the iSlate.

Whatever the device will be called, it represents an exciting and noteworthy development for publishers of print media. Finally, consumers will have a device that enables book reading in conjunction with several other useful processes and applications. The iSlate could be the device that combines all of the positive facets of a smart phone, desktop PC and notebook all rolled into one. Waracle are already eagerly planning the development of a range of publisher-focused applications for the iSlate/iTouch/iPad in 2010. Watch this space for more details!
